Rockfish River Rodeo 2026

Each summer a corner of Nelson County hosts Rockfish River Rodeo and has for the past 6 years. Cowboys and cowgirls prepare behind the chutes, families start to fill the grandstands, and the area transforms from a beautiful scenic backdrop to an arena for tradition, competition, and community.

The Rockfish River Rodeo is a living expression of Western heritage gathered in Virginia. From the bull riders daring to hang on for eight seconds to young riders testing themselves in mutton busting, to ladies barrel racing, every event carries its own marvel where all riders show grit and determination.

I was honored to be able to attend the event. These photographs explore both the action and the atmosphere surrounding it. Missing my own Texan and Oklahoma roots I've always had great respect for western culture and missed being surrounded by it. Thank you to the hosts of Rockfish and I can’t wait to attend again. Both digital and physical prints are available by clicking the button.
